Another County Heard From

A high-school classmate of mine left the US some years ago—as soon as he could retire—and is happily living as an expatriate in Southern Europe. Explaining his decision to live elsewhere, he says:

I'm proud to have been born in the US and exceedingly grateful to have received so many benefits (three degrees at no cost, as one example). However, it pains me greatly to witness what the US has become in recent years. With so much potential, it is slowly becoming a country that I find embarrassing. An old-style empire in slow decline, lashing out in all directions. The world is facing serious problems and the US could lead the way in correcting so many of them but is more concerned with irrelevancies, the pointless, the short-term solution. It's just shameful.
