Has America gone crazy?

I don't think there's any doubt as to the answer to this question.

Or perhaps a more precise question, to which the answer is also a resounding yes, is:

Has America become sick?

Actually, I think that's the better question, because one is more likely to look for causes and solutions in the case of "sick" than in the case of "crazy."

But something definitely has happened to America, and we are now witnessing the results of that illness / condition / injury. That the condition is/was self-inflicted is beyond question, but it would still be nice to figure out what happened. Why do act the way we do? What is wrong with us?
