It seems like only yesterday when Conservatives were arguing violently against women having the vote (first proposed in 1848, adopted in the form of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, 1920), and against civil rights for blacks.
Then, as now, while they argue violently against civil rights for anybody who is not-them, their main authority is The Bible. God told them to be bigots and racists and stand in the way of social progress, and by God they're going to do it.
Nevermind that they've been wrong on every issue of social importance for the past couple hundred (thousand?) years.

While I generally agree with most of what you say here, your last sentence ignores one historic fact. Abraham Lincoln was a Republican.
I also like a comment that a university professor made to a state senator somewhere who was claiming that the law follow the teachings of the bible. He said something like: "Senator, when you took the oath of office you put your hand on the bible and awore to uphold the Constitution, not the other way around."
