Good Bye Bob

On the halftime show of Sunday night's football game, NBC announcer extraodinaire and all-around sports guy Bob Costas put aside the normal "today's scores" summary and instead delivered a very mild but still startling comment on the death of an NFL player.

It was startling because it was critical of guns. Costas has the gall to suggest that if Mr. Jovan Belcher (the guy who killed his girlfriend and himself in Kansas City on Saturday) had not had a gun, the crime wouldn't have happened.

This is amazing. Everybody knows that having a gun made Belcher and girlfriend MORE safe than they would have otherwise been.

Given the number of gun-lovers amongst those in the sporting world and corporate sponsorships, I'm surprised Costas still has a job (as of 7 a.m. California time on the morning after). Of course, it's early.

Also, Costas is perhaps the #1 high-powered media guy in all of sports. Perhaps the gun-worshippers will be satisfied if the president of NBC  (or GE, the parent company) publicly grovels and explain that Costas not only didn't speak for the network but will be kept on a much shorter leash in the future.

roughly 97% of folks working in media vote Democrat. Immelt, the ceo of GE is a huge Obama supporter. Not real likely that a Democrat in a Democratic industry who has views far outside the mainstream would be chastised by folks with more extreme views.

Not surprising. Most people who can read above 3rd grade level realize that sports announcers and writers are journalists who are either too stupid or too lazy to report real news.
